In a moment, Su Jiu and Ji Yuxian were the only two people left in a room that was filled with people not too long ago.
Su Jiu sat down on a chair and gazed at the entire table of delicious food. She inhaled deeply. “It smells so good!”
And with that, she picked up her chopsticks. She first picked up a shrimp-ball and put it in her mouth. It was savory but without the overpowering taste of seafood. The meat was tender, plump, and quite delicious. Su Jiu stuffed some rice into her mouth, eating quite merrily.
Ji Yuxian sat across from her and watched with a wrinkled brow.
He couldn’t help but remember the table of discarded meat bones at the restaurant. Was this daughter of the Su family raised as a peasant?
Or was the Su family so poor that they couldn’t afford food?
Su Jiu’s table manners were far from elegant, and could even be described as brutish. But Ji Yuxian found that the more he watched her eat, the more aromatic the food seemed. She ate ungracefully, but he didn’t find it irritating to watch her.
Su Jiu ate to her heart’s content. Her mouth was stuffed full of food as she chewed. She looked up, saw that Ji Yuxian was watching, and froze. She slowly swallowed her food and coughed lightly. “Why are you watching? Why aren’t you eating?”
“Does it taste good?” Ji Yuxian asked with a smile.
Su Jiu stared at him with bright eyes and nodded honestly. ‘Very good!”
Ji Yuxian smiled and picked up his chopsticks to begin eating. But he avoided all the dishes that Su Jiu had touched.
Su Jiu paid no attention to this detail. Seeing that Ji Yuxian had begun eating, she continued eating as well.
Su Jiu ate very quickly. She finished a bowl of rice and filled it up with more rice. By the time she was done with her second bowl of rice, Ji Yuxian hadn’t even finished half of his bowl.
He ate slowly and elegantly, contrasting starkly with Su Jiu.
“I’m full, so I’ll be on my way!” Su Jiu wiped her mouth with her sleeve and stood up to leave.
“Don’t move, sit down!” Ji Yuxian suddenly spoke without looking up.
Su Jiu looked at him, confused. She sat back down.
Ji Yuxian continued slowly eating.
Su Jiu thought of something. She stood up and walked to his side. She picked up a pair of chopsticks to pick up some food to place onto his plate, but he suddenly blocked her arm. “Not necessary. I don’t eat from dishes that other people have eaten from.”
Su Jiu started. She realized that the duck meat she picked up was from a dish that she had eaten from.
High-maintenance!
If you starve for three days, you’d be willing to eat grass leftover by cows! Su Jiu thought to herself.
Su Jiu smirked in her head, but her expression remained unchanged. She picked up a piece of salmon and put it onto his plate. “There, I didn’t touch this dish.”
Ji Yuxian ignored the piece of salmon. His chucked. “What do you want to ask of me?”
Su Jiu started. She looked at him in surprise. “How do you know I want to ask something of you?”
Ji Yuxian’s lips curved into an alluring smile. “Speak.”
Su Jiu put down the chopsticks and sat down on a chair next to him. “Tomorrow is the day the bride visits her family.”
“Yes. I have a conference with the merchant responsible for importing items into the palace regarding a cloth order. I might not have time to accompany you.” Ji Yuxian’s voice was warm, gentle, and quite pleasing to the ear.
“If you’re not going, can I not go as well?” Su Jiu bargained.
The last few times she met the Su family, she was wearing a veil and a wind hat. But this time, she wouldn’t be able to continue wearing a veil. What if she had to dine with them?
Ji Yuxian raised an eyebrow and gazed at her face. “Why don’t you want to go?”
Brides, after three days of marriage, were expected to return to visit their families. The husband didn’t need to accompany her, but the bride must go.
Additionally, the bride had just left her family. After returning for a visit, surely she would have many things to say to her mother. In most cases, brides were quite eager to visit their families.
Su Jiu thought quickly and came up with an explanation.
“You know my mother is Madame Su. Her health is failing, and so she doesn’t really care for me. Second Mistress and I are not very close. If I return to visit, it would be awkward, so I may as well avoid seeing them.”
To accompany her speech, Su Jiu feigned a look of sadness.
Ji Yuxian gazed at her. This explanation seemed reasonable.
“Then what do you need me to do?”
“You only need to send someone there to say that I am ill, and cannot leave the bed. As for visiting my family, let’s skip it!”
Skip it?
Ji Yuxian was speechless. He chuckled lightly. “You can just send a servant who came with you.”
What was the point of asking him?
“Young Master, it would be more realistic if you were to send somebody,” Su Jiu said.
Ji Yuxian propped a hand on Su Jiu’s chair and leaned forward. His black eyes gazed at her softly, and his voice was gentle.
“It’s not ‘Young Master’. It’s ‘Husband’.”
“Huh?” Su Jiu started and then understood what he meant. She awkwardly turned her head to the side and nodded.
To hell with ‘Husband’!
I’m not any less of a man than you are, Su Jiu thought to herself. Referring to you as ‘Husband’? Hah!
Ji Yuxian misunderstood and thought that she was shy. He leaned in closer. He could smell the light fragrance coming from her perfume. He narrowed his eyes. “Let me hear you say it.”
Su Jiu gritted her teeth and resisted the urge to slap his hand away. She took a deep breath. “Help me first, and afterward I’ll say it.”
Ji Yuxian blinked his eyes, so close to her that his eyelashes nearly brushed up against her cheek. Su Jiu’s eyes were downcast, and her face seemed pale from excessive nervousness. How… boring!
Indeed young and inexperienced. Ji Yuxian lost interest and stopped teasing her. He slowly straightened his body.
“Very well.”
Su Jiu breathed a sigh of relief when she heard him agree. She looked up with a smile. “Thank you!”
This smile was like the moon, emerging from behind clouds. Like blossoms in the third month, blooming for the first time, beautifully proud in a light spring breeze. This was an exquisitely beautiful smile.
Ji Yuxian started. Confusion flashed briefly in his eyes. His lips curved into a slight smile.
Dinner was over, and the sky had become completely dark. Su Jiu left the dining room and headed towards her bedroom. After a few steps, she heard the sound of footsteps following her. She turned around, surprised.
“Why are you following me?”
Ji Yuxian raised an eyebrow innocently. “To sleep.”
Su Jiu suddenly remembered that the two of them were husband and wife. At night, they were to sleep together.
Hopefully, a certain somebody wouldn’t faint again tonight!
Nanny bowed respectfully when she saw that Ji Yuxian entered the bedroom as well. Her expression was quite complicated, both happy and worried. Chuang Huan, on the other hand, stood in a dark corner looking quite displeased.
“Eldest Young Master, Young Mistress, the bathwater is ready. Should I send a servant for the bath?”
“That won’t be necessary. Young Mistress is here, isn’t she?” Ji Yuxian chuckled quietly and walked into the inner room.
Nanny grabbed Su Jiu’s hand from behind, and whispered into her ear, “No matter what happens, Miss, you must tolerate it. Think of the bigger picture. If you really don’t want to do it, then think of some excuse.”
Tolerate what? Don’t want to do what?
Su Jiu listened with confusion. But just as she was about to ask her what she meant, Nanny retreated back and said loudly, “We’ll be on our way!”
And with that, she grabbed Chang Huan and the two of them exited through the door.
Chang Huan turned back and looked towards Su Jiu. He mouthed the words, “Don’t forget what I said.”
Su Jiu wrinkled her brow. What did Chang Huan say to her? Oh! He said not to let Ji Yuxian take off her clothes.
“Come here!” Ji Yuxian, waiting inside, was growing impatient.
Su Jiu pushed aside the curtain and entered the inner room. She saw that Ji Yuxian had already let down his hair. The long hair, as fine as black silk, flowed down behind his back, adding a seductive beauty to his handsome face.
“Undress me!” he opened his arms and spoke in a commanding tone.
Tolerate it!
Su Jiu thought of what Nanny had said, and immediately understood what she meant.
It’s just undressing him and serving him, Su Jiu thought to herself. What’s there to tolerate?
Su Jiu took two steps forward and reached out a hand to take off Ji Yuxian’s robe. She casually tossed it to the side. She then reached towards the jade belt over his silk undergarments…
